Core Advantages

What Clients Value Most

These are the qualities that clients most frequently mention when describing their experience with Thapthim.

Specialist Knowledge

Trademark and copyright are the whole of the practice — not one part of a general offering. This concentration produces a depth of familiarity with DIP procedures, examination practice, and court processes that generalist advisers rarely develop.

Candid Scope Assessment

The limits of what is achievable are discussed at the outset of every engagement. Clients understand from the first conversation what a filing, recordation, or enforcement inquiry realistically provides — and what it does not.

Readable Documentation

Agreements and filings are drafted in language that a client can follow. Clarity in the document itself reduces the risk of misunderstanding during the life of the agreement and makes disputes less likely to arise from ambiguous terms.

Thai Law — Not a Translation

Advice is based on how Thai law actually operates, not adapted from frameworks developed for other jurisdictions. DIP examination patterns, opposition practice, and enforcement pathways are understood from direct experience.

Long-Term Portfolio View

Portfolio management involves more than filing and renewal. Regular reviews consider whether each mark continues to serve the business it was registered for, and whether portfolio structure reflects current commercial priorities.

Responsive Communication

Clients receive substantive responses to questions, not holding messages. Status on a matter is provided before it needs to be requested. Deadlines are flagged well in advance.

Practice-Specific Expertise

Thapthim has worked exclusively in trademark and copyright since 2009. This means the team has encountered the full range of examination responses from the DIP, has handled oppositions across multiple classes, and has drafted licensing arrangements across a range of industries. General practice advisers who include IP as one service among many do not develop the same depth of procedural familiarity.

  • Sixteen years of focused Thai IP practice
  • Deep DIP examination pattern knowledge
  • Opposition and cancellation handling experience
  • IPCIT court procedure familiarity

In Practice

"When an examination office action arrives with an objection to distinctiveness, understanding how the DIP has treated similar marks in the past — and how to frame a substantive response — makes a meaningful difference to the outcome. This is knowledge that develops from doing the work, not from reading the statute."

How Fees Are Structured

  • Fixed fees for defined services (initial inquiry, recordation filing, standard licensing)
  • No surprise charges for standard office action responses within the agreed scope
  • Clear disbursement estimates provided before incurring official fees
  • Billing in Thai Baht with invoices issued promptly at each stage

Clear, Predictable Fees

IP work is often described as opaque in its pricing. Thapthim uses fixed fees for standard services and provides a written fee estimate before beginning any non-standard work. Official disbursements — DIP filing fees, translation costs where applicable — are itemised separately and not marked up.

Accessible, Direct Service

Clients communicate directly with the person handling their matter. There is no intake process that separates the enquirer from the adviser by multiple intermediaries. Questions about a matter in progress receive a substantive answer, not a routing message.

  • Direct contact with the responsible adviser
  • Responses to substantive questions within one working day
  • English-language correspondence throughout
  • Status updates provided proactively at each stage

Working Hours

The office is staffed Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 18:00 Bangkok time. Saturday consultations are available by prior arrangement for clients managing time-zone differences. Urgent deadline matters are handled outside standard hours where advance notice is given.

Distinctive Features

What Sets This Practice Apart

Mark Pre-Search Note

Prospective clients can share the wording of a proposed mark and the likely class through the contact form, and receive a short written note on whether a deeper availability search is worth commissioning. This is not a formal clearance — it is an initial orientation at no charge, to help decide whether further work makes sense.

Enforcement Pathway Mapping

For knock-off matters, the initial inquiry produces a written map of available pathways — customs, criminal, civil — with a candid assessment of what each is likely to achieve in the specific situation. Clients can then decide which path, if any, to pursue with informed expectations.

Madrid Protocol Coordination

International filings through the Madrid System are coordinated from the Thai basic mark, with clear advice on dependency rules and the practical realities of examination in selected member countries. Clients seeking multi-jurisdiction coverage have a single point of coordination.

Portfolio Rationalisation Reviews

For clients with mature portfolios, periodic reviews assess whether each registered mark continues to serve the commercial purpose for which it was filed. Marks that no longer earn their renewal costs are identified, reducing portfolio overhead without exposing the business to unnecessary gaps.
